Why Recycling Is Receiving Greater Attention in Malaysia

Recycling and waste management continue to receive national attention in Malaysia.

Malaysia’s national recycling rate reached 35.4% in 2023, according to the government’s 2025 Voluntary National Review. However, the same report notes that total waste generation continues to increase alongside population growth, lifestyle changes and urbanisation.

E-waste has also become an increasingly important issue.

Malaysia recorded 597,260 tonnes of e-waste generated between 2020 and 2024, according to a 2026 parliamentary response based on Department of Environment records.

In 2026, enforcement around illegal e-waste has also received significant attention. In September 2026, Malaysian authorities reported an illegal e-waste operation in Senawang involving an estimated RM7.78 million in seized materials.

These developments highlight why proper collection, responsible recycling and public awareness remain important.

For companies operating in the recycling sector, this makes community education and responsible recycling practices increasingly relevant.

Why Recycling Matters in E-Commerce

The growth of e-commerce has created another important recycling challenge: packaging waste.

Online purchases commonly involve cardboard boxes, plastic packaging, protective materials, courier bags and other packaging components.

A 2026 study of Malaysian online shoppers found that environmental knowledge had a direct relationship with consumers’ intention to recycle e-commerce packaging waste.

Another 2026 study on Malaysian e-commerce identified packaging waste, limited sustainable packaging options and fragmented recycling infrastructure as challenges for more sustainable e-commerce practices.

This means recycling awareness is increasingly relevant not only at home or in workplaces, but also across the growing e-commerce ecosystem.

Businesses and consumers can contribute by choosing appropriate packaging, separating recyclable materials and ensuring materials enter suitable recycling channels.

From Awareness to Action

Previous Thanam Industry activities demonstrate this approach. During a beach-cleanup collaboration, the team delivered awareness on recycling and waste management before assisting volunteers with identifying, collecting, sorting and transferring waste material. Approximately 500 kg of waste material was collected during that activity.
