Recycling has become more common than ever and a range of products right from cans, metals, electronic items to books are recycled these days. In Malaysia, recycling business is picking up and there is a lot of scope for industries to grow. At the same time growing awareness about recycling among consumers is also helping the environment in many ways.
A scrapbook is the one which is ready to be recycled. Although it is usually suggested that instead of discarding or tearing the scrapbook for recycling, giving it to libraries or charities would help. But beyond an extent, mass scale collection of scrapbook needs to undergo processing for further use as paper and other useful products.
Differs from Paper
There is a process through which any scrapbook can be recycled. The process is different from that of plain paper because there is a hard cover attacked to it, magazines and books are generally stapled or glued which makes it more difficult for quick recycling.

Scrapbook can be of different categories such as phone books, magazines, hardcover books and paperback books.
Phonebooks
Old Phone books are a form of scrapbook which can be recycled into new phonebooks. It is however important that any plastic bags and magnets are removed before recycling because they are of different composition and needs to be separated from plain or hard paper.
Magazines
Though magazine papers are glossy, this may not affect their recyclability and they can be easily recycled similar to a paper. But due care to be taken to see that the covers of magazine are removed manually or automatically. They may also be stapled and hence make sure that these staples are removed from the cover. However, modern paper mills set up for recycling can automatically remove contaminants, like paper clips and staples from the paper pulp during the recycling process.
Hardcover Books
When it comes to a scrapbook like hardcover books it becomes mandatory to remove the covers before recycling. Once the cover is removed, the hard papers need chemical treatment wherein the papers are subjected to chemicals which softens them and makes them fit for further recycling. Once the chemical treatment is done, the papers have to be again dried before starting the process of recycling.
