Understand the facts about Waste disposal

Reading Time: 2 minutes

An average household worldwide disposes about 4.45 kilograms of waste every single day. Nearly 95% of this waste that we dispose forms landfills and occupies huge acres of land. Also, one of out of every 2 landfills needs tremendous amount of repairs to prevent leakage. Some types of wastes like plastic are not biodegradable. Plastic stays in the landfills for a long time and fragments into smaller particles over a period of time. These particles contaminate the air and water systematically. Other wastes, like metals and solid plastics, stay in the environment for an extended period of time in landfills and they make the soil infertile after some time.

Here are some facts about waste disposal that you may not know.

Facts that we didn’t know

Recycling one single can of aluminum saves energy that is equivalent to a can of gasoline. Aluminum is a hard metal and it can be reused several times. The quality of aluminum stays intact even after being recycled several times.

About 500,000 trees are cut to produce 88% of newspapers worldwide. Nearly 66% of these newspapers never reach the paper recycling units. Newspapers can be recycled to make low grade paper.

People on an average dispose 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour. These bottles cannot be reused however they can be recycled.

Nearly 45,000 tons of plastic is dumped into the ocean every year. Due to this mindless waste disposal nearly one million sea birds and several species in the ocean are killed. These plastics are made from hazardous material and they are mostly fishing hooks, aluminum cans, plastic bags and Styrofoam.

Packaging industry consumes 50% of the paper produced every year. They even use glass and aluminum to a large extent.

Waste disposal units across the world process 208 million tons of waste in a year.

How do Waste disposal companies help?

Waste disposal units help to process the waste by recycling it and help in its management. Recycled waste is used to manufacture various kinds of products. Some materials, like glass, metals and plastic are highly valuable for the recycling industry. Even paper is considered a precious item. Recycling paper directly saves the trees and also prevents deforestation. Recycling of plastic prevents the oceans and the marine life from dying. A plastic bag can stay in the ocean bed for as much as 200 years. Unsuspecting marine life sometimes consumes this plastic and chokes to death.

By recycling these hazardous products and buying recycled items we save the planet from depletion of resources. Buying and using recycled products should be a conscious effort on our part. By using more of recycled products we are promoting the industry. We also need to make a conscious effort by disposing the waste in a responsible way.

Proper Waste disposal is a boon to the people and environment. Recycling companies and Waste management units work together in cleaning the environment. Waste management companies ensure that the disposed items reach the right recycling unit. They sort out the trash based on their type and send them to the appropriate recycling units. It is a laborious process, but it is also an awarding profession.
